Isaline Hugonnet

Juggling, Object manipulation, Diabolo

France

I am Isaline, originally from a small village in French-speaking Switzerland. I discovered circus through an introduction to juggling when I was around 14 years old. I then explored different facets of circus arts before eventually returning to juggling. It was only later that I realized I could make a profession out of it, and it then became an obvious path. I decided to train seriously and went to a circus school in Finland, where I began developing a practice of foot juggling and ball manipulation while balancing on my hands.

I later moved to Châlons-en-Champagne to study at the Centre national des arts du cirque (CNAC), where I started as a solo artist before forming a duo with Yu-yin Lin. I also draw inspiration from other artistic practices that are important to me, such as music (bass clarinet), hair suspension, and more recently, sewing.

Although I find the hybrid nature of circus interesting, I also think it is an art form that stands on its own and is really “very cool.” For me, circus is a metaphorical art, sometimes rational and sometimes not.

With Yu-yin Lin, a fellow student in the same CNAC cohort, we created a duo focused on object manipulation, diabolo, and juggling balls. We share a common interest in making and transforming various elements such as scenographic objects, apparatus, and costumes. We are especially fond of absurdity.
