Matiss was born in Réunion Island. At the age of 8, he joined the regional conservatory of dance. Four years later, he did not succeed in passing the exam to move into the second cycle.
Frustrated, he turned toward other disciplines such as slacklining, acrobatics, and eventually circus arts. However, he never stopped dancing.
In 2015, he enrolled in the circus specialization track at the École nationale de cirque de Châtellerault, where he specialized in tightwire thanks to his experience in slacklining.
He continued his training at the École de cirque de Québec, and later at the Centre national des arts du cirque.
Through his travels and cultural background, he has become fascinated by differences and crossovers between techniques, cultures, and worldviews in performing and visual arts.
All of this strongly encourages him to pursue a research practice that is as hybrid and cross-cultural as possible.
