Alice Ronfard Biography - Resume

To date, Alice Ronfard has directed some thirty plays and received numerous awards. In 1988, she was awarded the Grand Prix de la Communauté urbaine de Montréal for Shakespeare's The Tempest, co-translated with Marie Cardinal. The following year, at the Festival de Théâtre des Amériques, she created L'Annonce faite à Marie by Claudel, which won the Prix de l'Association québécoise des critiques de théâtre for the best direction. Then, she directed Billy Strauss by Lise Vaillancourt (1990) and tackled a text by Koltès, Dans la solitude des champs de coton (1991). Then came Henri IV by Pirandello (1991), texts by Normand Chaurette: Provincetown Playhouse, July 1919, I was 19 years old and La Società di Metis (1992), which she directed as a guest director at the Florence Intercity Festival for the Québec theatre scene. In 1992, Les Troyennes d'Euripide (1993), for which she won the Gascon-Roux Prize for best director. She then returned to the Quebec repertoire with Julie by René-Daniel Dubois (1993) and Héliothropes by Michel Garneau (1994). As you like by Shakespeare (1994) and Marie Stuart by Schiller (1995) win two audience awards.
In 1996, she designed a museum exhibition entitled Femmes corps et âme, for which she received the Award of Excellence from the Canadian Museums Association.
In recent years, she has directed The Second Surprise of Love by Marivaux and Quai Ouest by Koltès (1997), Yvonne Princesse de Bourgogne by Gombrovicz, which won her the Masque for Best Director (1999), La Voix humaine by Cocteau, King by Vinaver (1999) and Floes by Sébastien Harrison (2001). L'Avare de Molière at the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde. In opera, she directs Cosi Fan Tutte (2002), Le dialogue des Carmélites by Francis Poulenc, Le songe d'une nuit d'été by Benjamin Britten (2003), La faim Artaud by Analia Lugddar. During the 2008-2011 seasons at Espace GO in Montreal and at the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde, she began a trilogy of Evelyne de la Chenelière's plays, Désordre Public, Les pieds des anges and L'Imposture 2011.
In 2014, at Espace Go, she directed Une vie pour deux by Évelyne de la Chenelière, a play that will lead her to co-direct a film with Luc Bourdon in 2015, which will be presented at the Festival du nouveau Cinéma and at the Rendez-vous du cinéma Québécois. 
In 2016-2017 she reconnected with Sébastien Harrisson and created La Cantate intérieure with the Théâtre des 2 Mondes.
In 2016, in collaboration with Antoine Rigot, she created Sous la toile de Jheronimus, a circus theatre show with the troupe Les Colporteurs (France - Netherlands)For several years now, she has participated as a playwright, mentor, co-director or co-designer in various creations with emerging artists such as Mani Soleymanlou (Un et Deux), Dany Boudreau ((E)), Emmanuel Schwartz (Chroniques), Solène Paré (Quartett) and more recently in 2017 Emmanuel Schwartz's Exhibition presented at the Festival Trans Amériques in co-production with l'Ancre de Charleroi and Eve Présseault (Vodka-Croissant) presented at the OFFTA living arts festival. 
Alice Ronfard teaches in several theatre schools as part of their production, scenography and acting training programs.
